ABout the Artist

New Orleans artist Allison Stewart has gained national recognition for her large, mixed media paintings that express the restless balance between man and nature.  Stewart trained as a biologist and an artist, receiving a B.S. in Biology from Spring Hill College in Mob and an M.F.A from the University of New Orleans.  Her work is inspired by landscape imagery, and she takes as her subject fragile environments, cycles of life, and primitive artifacts from past cultures.  She uses layers of color, light, form and texture to address issues of beauty and loss, time and transformation.

“I make art about the natural world in a dynamic flow between order and chaos, between creation and destruction. I often reflect upon the overlooked aspects of nature, the quiet moments when change occurs outside of our awareness. My paintings reside in the ambiguous space between realism and abstraction.  I often find inspiration in the microscopic world that describes the unseen realms of cells and microbes.  As an artist I value the power of art that resonates, that is open to interpretation, that speaks to its own time, yet still has the courage to be beautiful.’’Residing somewhere between realism and abstraction, Stewart’s paintings are visual diaries upon which the artist records her responses to the threatened landscape. Her paintings reflect the duality of substance and spirit, image and impression, observation and memory.

Allison Stewart has exhibited extensively throughout the United States.  Her work is included in many public and corporate collections, including the U.S. Department of State Art in Embassies Program, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Historic New Orleans Collection, Texaco, Freeport McMoRan, Price Waterhouse Corp., Chase Manhattan Bank, ARCO, American Express, Sun Bank of Florida, Pan American Life, Ritz Carlton Hotels, and the Pensacola Museum of Art.  She was also commissioned to create paintings for the public spaces in the Hotel Intercontinental and the Sheraton ITT in New Orleans, the Four Seasons Hotel in Scottsdale, AZ, Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami, Le Saint Seran Resort in Mauritius, South Africa, and the Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat in the south of France.
