Michael Gregory on cover of Jesse’s Ghost: A Novel

Michael Gregory’s painting, “One Way of Looking,” is the cover for a new book by Frank Bergon, “Jesse’s Ghost: A Novel.”
“Jesse’s Ghost” is a powerful novel about a man haunted by the crime he committed decades ago and the realization that the ghosts of his past will always haunt him. These are the sons and daughters of the people portrayed in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath–Dust Bowl descendants who came of age when toughness, hard work, and loyalty defined what it meant to be a man in America.

β€œEncaustic” painting was first practiced centuries ago by the Greeks and Romans, and means β€œburned in,” implying the use of heat.Β  Traditionally the process involved heating and mixing of dry pigments and beeswax, and it results in a rich, lustrous surface.
